Just What I Wanted Aug 24, 2008
By Michael Graves This rucksack is just what I wanted with no unpleasant surprises. It is well-constructed with good quality cotton canvas and heavy stitching. It features one large interior compartment and several convenient outside pockets to tote the little stuff. The waist belt is good for long treks, but it's easily removed for light loads and short walks. Also, the bag's dimensions fall within airline carry-on restrictions. My bag arrived six days after purchase.

Waste Of Money! Feb 20, 2011
By Nutrition and Health Advocate I purchased this item for college and possibly some hiking. The price seemed reasonable for what looked like a quality bag. Unfortunately, this wasn't at all the case. The very obnoxious shoulder straps, which feed through the buckle, ALWAYS slide loose. They won't stay where you put them. At one point, I simply tied them into a very tight knot in order to keep them from completely unbuckling. Also, if you put very much weight in the top compartment, the stitching soon gives out and you'll have to resew it. The spacious design seemed like a good idea, but the pack will keep no shape unless thoroughly filled. Because of the poorly designed straps and the stirching giving out so soon, I attempted to deal with the company instead of writing a bad review. Unfortunately they are unwilling to refund your money unless you pay for all of the return shipping- in my case that would be atleast a third of the cost of the bag! They don't consider the pack defective since "another pack would be just the same." I wouldn't recommend this pack to anyone!

I fit most of my hiking stuff for a day or two journey in this backpack. it is spacious and has many compartments. It also appears to be made of canvas or a canvas like material.

Durable basic backpack or rucksack for hot humid exposures Sep 17, 2010

Cotton Canvas
_Large_ drawstring main compartment WWII old style belt loop closures metal latches softbag easily conforms to seating under airplanes
Cons:
plastic zippers No padded shoulder straps Plastic waist buckle
Many backpacks today are made of nylon and use plastic zippers, plastic snaps and buckles. Having used nylon bags for decades know that getting nylon bags soaked in water [ rain, ocean exposure, used in boats etc., ] weakens the material and exposure to sunlight degrades nylon and plastic more than cotton. After a few years, plastic snaps become brittle then crack and wet nylon loses half its strength making it most susceptible to tear, puncture and abrasion ... not so cotton. Nylon is harder to field repair for rips, such as stitching with needle and thread. In camp fires, any small flying embers quickly bores holes in nylon. I've destroyed 3 rucksacks this way and 5 travel bags. The only ones to survive this type of abuse are canvas or if nylon bags aren't exposed to sunlight or water.
Thus, a more durable bag for general outdoor use is hot/wet climates is cotton canvas with metal fixtures, but its main drawback is weight for its size, nylon is lighter and stronger if dry. Cotton canvas bags with all metal closures can last a lifetime, and often you'll find army surplus bags as far as WWII still for sale, but hardly any nylon bags as second hand. The drawstring single large compartment can stretch to fill large loads, so its not limited by the shape forced onto it by a zipper closure, found on most bags.
Weak point for this bag are its zipper teeth are nylon, but they are covered and should be shielded from sunlight.
The straps have no padding, and heavy loads can bite into your shoulders when light clothing doesn't provide enough 'padding' for the straps; if this is a problem, add on shoulder pads will work. Otherwise, the shoulder straps are comfortable.
For waterproofing, you can spray cotton canvas with chemicals, but its easier to use a true dry bag or plastic bags to wrap need-be-dry items kept inside the bag. Cottons tensile strength is increase or unchanged when wet, so keeping cotton dry is unnecessary, but its best to dry out a bag to prevent mildew. For wet weather use, it can be worn outside a parka for convenience until dry.
The easy access top compartment is too easy to access, and the zipper can open accidentally. I suggest you add a small clip to hold it shut together, during travel I use a TSA travel lock.
