Fantastic Instrument But Not A Sax Jun 25, 2009
By Lorenzo J. Morin

After researching this instrument both on the Xaphoon site and U Tube and others I knew what it was capable of in the hands of other players / musicians and quickly ordered one. The construction of the plastic Xaphoon is such that it is practically impossible for one to be "defective". I am also a sax player ( soprano & alto ) and my first few minutes with the Xaphoon were frustrating. It is not a sax. The reed wants to be positioned a little differently. The position of the mouthpiece in your mouth is different. Finger position is critical and covered holes must be completely sealed. Lots of how to info available online. Anyway in a short while I was getting actual musical tones. And within a couple of days I was moving easily from lowest note all the way up to the upper register. It is capable of an incredible range of amazingly rich sounds and now goes with me everywhere. There is even an excellent music notation program which automatically prints out Xaphoon fingering below the notes. Great unique instrument. Not a sax.

Not a Saxophone But Good Nov 17, 2010
By nobbsy I own three of these instruments, plus a more expensive wooden version (in B flat) which appears to be hand made. I pretty much agree with the reviewer who gave the five star rating. I don't get the guy who gives it one star. He says he plays the saxophone but was unable to get a tone from the Xaphoon he purchased. That would be understandable for the average buyer with no musical background on woodwind instruments. The Xaphoon (pocket saxophone) is actually much harder to play than a real sax, (especially sharps and flats) but it is also much more portable and convenient. You can carry it around with you, play it anywhere. If you already know how to play the saxophone, or clarinet, it's not too hard to learn to play the Xaphoon. And a lot of fun. If you're a complete beginner, I would advise against taking up the study of music with this instrument. Producing a good tone is just as difficult as with a real saxophone, and once you depart from the key of C, the fingering is much more difficult.
The Xaphoon Rocks!! Dec 17, 2011

I love the Xaphoon! I play sax recreationally and within minutes taking it out of the box, I was already dishing out sax/clarinet sounding notes. The fingering takes a little getting used to but thats with any new instrument (I also play guitar and piano). I enjoy the portability as well where I can just toss it into my backpack and take it with me anywhere. I want to purchase an original once I'm more comfortable with the fingering and then the cobalt blue Xaphoon too! Whether you are a seasoned sax/clarinet pro or just a beginner, the Xaphoon won't disappoint!!

Quite a disappointment Jun 13, 2009
By Ross Flexhaug Since I play the saxophone I thought this would be fun and easy to take along for practice on the road or to make music for my granddaughter to dance to. Try as I might, I can only get one squawking note from the Xaphoon. Manipulating the finger holes make absolutely no change in tone. Not sure if I got a flawed product or if they are all this way. Pay your money, take your chances, but it didn't work at all for me.
